As part of the “Marmara Sea Day” events organized by Tuzla Municipality, a sea cleanup event was held on Tuzla Beach on June 1, 2025, to raise environmental awareness and draw attention to the protection of the seas. Piri Reis University, the Underwater Cleaning and Awareness Movement Association (STH) and the Respect for the Deep Diving Community took an active part in the event.
The event drew strong interest from Piri Reis University’s academic and administrative staff and students. It highlighted the environmental threats facing the Sea of Marmara and emphasized the importance of sustainable maritime and environmental policies. Students from the university’s Underwater Technology Program dove with their diving equipment and collected waste that had accumulated on the seabed, while volunteer teams cleaned the shoreline on land.
During the event, dives at different locations removed plastic waste, glass bottles, cans, pieces of fishing nets and various household waste from the sea. The work once again showed how important collaboration between local governments, universities and non-governmental organizations is for protecting the marine ecosystem.
Piri Reis University officials stated that the university considers it its duty to contribute to society not only through maritime education but also through environmental awareness projects. They added that taking part in events like this helps students become environmentally conscious seafarers.
The event concluded with the slogan “Hand in Hand for the Future of the Sea of Marmara” and was highly appreciated by participants. It was an important step toward increasing environmental awareness in society and, in particular, educating young generations about keeping the seas clean.
